Years ago (1970's-80s) my grandmother, who was a long-time resident of the Mission district and a very social person, was somehow friends with an older white guy who ran a Chinese language bookstore in the Mission that specialized in translations of books from PRC. She told me the PRC funded his bookstore, which despite barely any customers or open hours stayed mysteriously afloat for years. I wouldn't be surprised at all if some of their financial largesse extended to political groups like the Chinese Progressive Association.

We all seem to be learning a lot about Latinos and African-Americans who are racists...quelle surprise!

So can we just say these people are morons? Clever ones to be sure, that got them this far, but as with every radical group and alliance before them, they eat everything around them and then start eating each other.

Long before your time, that TV movie Katherine which fictionalized all that middle-class Weather Underground righteous destruction.

Here too it's middle-class success turned to idiocy. I do sincerely hope you yourself will never ever use the words "bourgeois" or its silly reduction "bougie" in anything you write. I thank God I'm middle-class, though hanging on by a shred; my immigrant (illegal alien) grandparents suffered terribly so that I could be here now.

Morons like Mar are destroying NY too--where I was born and raised and am now gratefully a former resident of.

Why is it that all these idiots seem to come from northern (as opposed to southern) CA?

I lived in LA for 12 years and believe me, I could churn out a lot of posts on the idiocy of politicians in SoCal.

Hey, thanks for the link to that Kate Coleman article with Paul Avery - that was an eye opener. As for my comment, I was thinking more about the general attitudes of the people rather than the elected officials. I'm reminded of the time the Berkeley city council tried to remove the army recruiting office. The ensuing council meeting was really worth watching. People seem more practical down south (outside of LA at least) although that is changing.

yeah they're not quite as ideological in LA but there are plenty (Mike Bonin eg.) who would fit right in in SF.

.. speaking of the Huey Newton, my brother just sent me this latest report from Oakland

I often wonder with people like Mar and Bonin if their politics really just boil down to some personal issue they have with the world - their politics just window dressing, a means to an end.

No police departments were actually defunded. Oakland promised to do so, then increased the funding in the next budget cycle. San Francisco bandied it about but did the same. "Defund the police" is one of those canards that non-serious people use to bash radical leftists. And they deserve it! But it is about as relevant as claiming the Black Panthers are an important political force today. As you said only 16% of Americans support it.

An overwhelming majority of Americans think that the justice system is racist and want criminal justice reform. That is important and missing from your analysis here. The Black Lives Matter movement had some small impact here, leading to reform minded DAs being elected in many cites, though Boudin was recalled in a hate-filled propaganda campaign funded primarily by out of state billionaires.

Crime is up all over America and is up the most in Red States and Red Cities that have taken a "get tough on crime" approach. San Francisco is almost unique in that violent crime has dropped since 2019.

The sources I'm seeing say Newton died in 1989, not 1982.
