Loved this, Leighton. It has been clear to me for some time that the MSM complex is made up of activists (journalists) who preach to their choir (readers/viewers) and the “brand extensions” are the proverbial icing on the cake. I mean what woke, elitist Amherst grad wouldn’t want to build houses for poor Peruvians while also ensuring that their fellow woke alums can follow their every move?

Another great article that takes something one saw in passing and puts it into a larger context. But I have to wonder, we're already seeing the effect this "marketization" of journalism is having (and it's not pretty). Is there any way to counteract it on a large scale? Because as much as a healthy public education system is vital to a democracy, so is a healthy journalistic institution that isn't little more than feel-good (or bad) propaganda.

I don't think there really is a way to counteract it, unfortunately. I've been reading Postjournalism, the book I mention in the piece, and it's bleak as hell.
