Extraordinary piece! I read the first few paragraphs and immediately subscribed to your Substack.

For all the blather of Sam,Harris and the New Atheists, the greatest threat to the Enlightenment is not "radical Islam" - it's clearly super intelligent AI. It's an existential threat to anything that would call itself Humanism, or that has its roots in it.

We aren't miles apart on the matter of God's existence. In fact, I only claim to believe in one more God than you do :-). I'm now a devout and spiritual Catholic. and I have a couple observations about AI and Catholicism that might be of interest.

Recently-elected Pope Leo XIV is expected to imminently author an encyclical concerning AI. It may even appear before the end of the summer. I would encourage you to read it when it does appear. I would anticipate that it will largely condemn it on the basis of its robbery of the human person of Reason, which the Catholic Church regards as (along with Faith) an essential gift from God.

And when that encyclical *is* published, it will be interesting to observe the reaction to it from JD Vance - who professes himself a devout Catholic. We've already observed a rift between the Church and Vance on the matter of immigration, but it will pale in significance to the one that appears on the matter of AI.

Because JD Vance has already outed himself as an "AI Accelerationist". I'm sure your fellow writer and friend Pedro L. Gonzalez would agree with me here. Vance has already made statements that AI should not be over-regulated and that workers should not fear it. He won't be able to "ordo amoris" his way out of that one.

I like your characterization of Thiel's AI project as the Antichrist. It's spot-on. I'll leave you with an observation from the Catechism of the Catholic Church.

"The Church's ultimate trial"

675 Before Christ's second coming the Church must pass through a final trial that will shake the faith of many believers. The persecution that accompanies her pilgrimage on earth will unveil the "mystery of iniquity" in the form of a religious deception offering men an apparent solution to their problems at the price of apostasy from the truth. The supreme religious deception is that of the Antichrist, a pseudo-messianism by which man glorifies himself in place of God and of his Messiah come in the flesh.

Whether you subscribe to Christianity or the Enlightenment as the underpinning for your worldview, I think you can grasp the wisdom of that warning.

Nick Bostrom warned us about AGI and Alignment in his 2014 book Superintelligence. His predictions have unfolded very accurately thus far, so that's about 11 years of being more or less on the money.

That being said, LLMs remain completely free of creativity, in my opinion. They remain essentially better search engines. I have a suspicion that this is due to their ultimately binary and deterministic nature. Even though transformers aren't interpretable deep in their guts, they are dependent on their initial state. Computers remain unable to generate true randomness. Humans can--maybe due to some deep seated quantum processes in our cognition (or maybe because we have souls, not that you'd buy that Leighton. :-)) This remains my hope that humanness will always be better--Kingsnorth would say "holier."

On the depressing end, I have been most surprised with the lack of fight humans are putting up as AI takes their jobs. Everyone seems to know that they are being made obsolete, but the arms race you describe with China is being played out on a micro scale--as long as I beat the other guy with AI, I'll take another year of employment. I suspect that AI's true danger might be in making us incredibly stupid and free of will--which might be Thiel et al's whole play.
